Finally after two and half years of blogging I thought it about time to have a little give away. I've pondered the idea many times but always wondered what to actually give away, I mean most people who read my blog are crafty and can make what ever they want for themselves. BUT someone may just want a gift made by me.

Flea Market Finds

A few finds from Christmas and the oppies in Wagga.

Some bark cloth kitchen curtains in perfect condition.

A pewter owl incense burner I gave to my sister for Christmas, love this little guy.

Some art glass I gave to my other sis for her growing collection.

Some pretty hand painted china plates and silver ware. These plates were a steal for 20c each.

And this gorgeous old sewing box gifted to me by my big sis. It was filled with all sorts of coloured vintage threads and British snaps and the sweetest cross stitch pin cushion.

Vintage drawer = crafty storage

If there is ever a need for a quick crafty fix then this takes the cake. I found this old drawer in my Grandma's shed months ago, I had planned to use it as a kitchen tray but could not find the room for a bulky drawer in my sleek new kitchen.

My sewing room is so cluttered and certainly does not need any extra bits of furniture but I thought if I could get it off the desk and on the wall then my use for this little piece of pretty would be solved.

Some adhesive spray and a fave piece of sheeting did the trick. Within 5 minutes I had this cute storage wall tray ready to hang................................. now I just have to convince the mister to drill a hole in these old walls.

Sheet Shorts

Finally something for the boy, I am always on the lookout for cool boys sheets in the oppys, sadly they are very few and far between. I used the three that I had and they match perfectly together. Not sure how long they will last as my boys are very rough on their cloths and used cotton sheeting is not the most durable but if we get through the summer then I'm happy.

These three fabrics along with others I hope to find will go into a boys vintage quilt one day.

Chevron from the Bee

Quilting Bees!!! something I had never heard of before I started my little blog. I quickly became intrigued and through a friend I landed in this fabulous bee of lovely ladies. I still have not stitched my blocks together from last years efforts but this year I am really motivated. It's something for me, I popped along to Cloth in Surry Hills, their drool worthy fabrics are to die for and I had to come home with the heaviest bag of hand printed linen. (I tried to justify the $45m price tag with the fact that most of my other fabrics at the moment come from Vinnies) certainly made me feel a little better anyway.

The Beehive ladies have done a superb job of sewing a strip each for me. I am still waiting on a couple and a few to make myself then I'm ready to start sewing this baby together.

I cannot take the credit for the pattern, I spotted in on this amazing blog. Siobhan is so talented and very prolific, go take a peek!

It's a Wrap

The vintage sheet stash is getting way out of control, so much so that sewing in my craft room has ceased. At least until I can get in there and have a good old tidy up.

I took a few sheets to mum's for our week in Wagga, a trip to mum's is never complete without a spot of sewing. I cut a pattern from an existing store bought skirt of Rosa's and chose 4 fabrics that would compliment each other.

I don't think it matters what colours you choose they always seem to mesh together beautifully.

Do you find it hard to leave vintage sheets on the shelf when you are op shopping?

What I like

I mentioned once or twice that my family and I decided to buy thrifted gifts for each other this past Christmas. Well I'm pleased to say that my loved ones know exactly what I like. Anything milk glass, aqua, white, vintage are all on the list of things I love. I'm glad they know me so well.

Milk glass from my BF and doily coasters from my mum.

The tulip linen table runner is stunning and from my mum. The juicer is a little pressie I bought for me, how could I resist for only $5.

These special Poole pieces were from my Grandma's house and gifted to me from mum.

The mini cassette suitcase also from Gran's and the milkglass goblets which I think might just be my favourite are from my brother sourced by my sister as my bro left it way too late to start thrifting in late December.

Paul received this piece of industrial goodness from my mum, also found at Grandma's. It's filled with all the original medical bits. So, so cool don't you think?

And last but certainly not least some vintage pyrex from Lea.

More thrifted Christmas lovelies next week but in the meantime pop over to Sophies to see some more.

Painting the New Year away

So, you would think one should start the new year with relaxation, quality time with kids and some precious family holiday moments...but no! what did the husband and I decide to do come this new year?......Paint ceilings that's what. We have had an exhausting 4 days without children to restore and paint 4 pressed metal ceilings in our old home.

Each morning I was finding more and more paint lying on the floor in the boys room, the ceilings were a little worse for wear and needed some urgent attention.

We found lots of these, those of you with boys will recognise them as magnetix. A favourite pastime of the boys when they were supposed to be sleeping. Magic! they stick to the ceiling.

We stripped for six hours and decided we only had 5 days not 5 weeks. So we peeled back only the bad bits.

Each ceiling has it's own unique pattern and they are just beautiful.

It's been exhausting but rewarding and well worth the $1000's of dollars we have saved, my only gripe would be this little paint sperm found on my blind a little too late to wipe off (it wasn't me). I guess we'll have to live with him.

On another note, what I should be saying is Happy New Year and telling you of my resolutions, something along the lines of spend more quality time with the kids, go to bed earlier and make the most of each morning, drink less wine and exercise more, sew more and perhaps even make a little money given that I will have 3 child free days this year and lastly s-l-o-w down..........well these are my resolutions and I hope to stick to them.

The other thing I must say is a huge thank you to YOU........... all my lovely readers and followers, your thoughts and comments really do mean so much to me and I hope to blog a whole lot more this year too.

Tomorrow we are off to meet the kids in Wagga and spend some time swimming, BBQing with special friends and some quality family time just hanging and keeping things slow and simple.

So the month has almost past and what a whirl wind of a December it was. We have enjoyed the best kind of Christmas, simple with lots of family and friends, yummy food, some good laughs and even some sleep ins.

One of my loveliest friends dropped in yesterday, I few weeks back I gave her this thrifted Irish linen tea towel rolled up in a Fowler jar, she kept the jar and handed the tea towel back to me saying that it was way too nice to dry dishes on.........so a pillow it was to become, the green zip is in the spirit of Christmas and the orange backing was fabric I had on hand.

And look what the naughty girl gave me, I swear she never visits empty handed. The cutest Holly bush with bright red faux berries. I hear it's very hard to find budding holly in the southern hemisphere at Christmas.

Another special friend dropped in just when I popped the kettle on. She gifted me a magnificent stack of this. I'm only sorry I didn't take a pic before we ripped the cellophane off and devoured it with our cuppa tea. You really need to make these brownies, divine I tell you.

Flea Market Finds

Lots of treasures found lately at the oppies and this is only half of it. My siblings and I decided last Christmas that we would only shop second hand for gifts this year and it's been so much fun, forever on the lookout for that perfect gift.

Of course I cannot go past a few lovelies for me. These table cloths are in beautiful condition and I just love that yellow rose.

Some sweet milk glass and the most perfect little brass owls.

Some Scandinavian style china and even a spare plate for my wall. Love this!

Two vintage Mikasa dinner plates and of course one small one for my wall.

And this perfect glass ball just made for a candle, oh so pretty.

Out with the old

In January this year Paul and I embarked on some pretty major renos for our lovely old house.

Ceilings were pulled down......

nb. hubby's arms are really not that brown, there was 110 years of dust that came down not to mention an old, dead, squashed rat among other things....eeew!

Bats were laid, Gyprock was installed...

Note to self: never do this again, it was just plain stressful getting these massive sheets above your head and onto the ceiling without snapping them. We did hire a great hoisting device and the help of our friendly neighbour but at times I wished we had got the professionals in. Having said that, we are really happy with the end result.

L.E.D down lights were installed.

By July this year we found a kitchen designer who I won't name because I would not use them again but that's a whole other story.

We were thrilled with the design and it was time to start the demolition and get the floors ready. Secretly I think this was Paul's favourite part. For weeks he nagged me to let him take the sink away, but I feared being without one for too long so I kept saying "just a bit longer, just a bit longer"

As the old fire place was knocked out I couldn't help but think of all the meals that were created here back in the early 1900's. We had taken the old pot belly stove out years ago to make room for shelving but the big brick chimney was still there. See the charred wall in the background.

The old floor was ripped up and sold on ebay for a grand price of $50.

The old back door was bricked in not once but twice by ~~Mr perfectionist~~ Paul. The first one had a slight bow effect, not good when you need to line cupboards up against it.

Then a door way was cut into the old window.

At this point new floors had been laid by professionals. We used spotted gum and I'm so happy with it.

The long awaited kitchen goes in.

I won't sugar coat it and I wont pretend it was easy washing up in the bath tub for 3 months. We had more problems than you would ever believe...seriously! all of which were from the kitchen company and suppliers.

BUT.............. the outcome has been well worth the sweat, occaisonal tears and way too much swearing.

In with the new.........

Needless to say I am one very lucky and very happy chappy.

ps. Now i'm hoping it will make me a better cook.

Holly Hobbie dress

You can imagine my delight when I opened a $5 pack of mixed fabrics from a Wagga Vinnies earlier this year. 2 metres of this sweet vintage Holly Hobbie fabric was thrown into the mix.

Teaming it with a lace table cloth for the sleeves and you have one pretty cute little dress for our little 3 year old friend who celebrated her birthday this week.

I think there will be more dresses made this week, I've got the bug!

$5 lightshade

A little while ago I found this rather tacky light shade in Vinnies for $5. The old dear who sold it to me was admiring it telling me how lovely it was with all the lace and trims. I just smiled and agreed, I didn't want to tell her I was planning to rip the dusty, musty peach fabric off it as soon as I got home.

I may spray paint it aqua or yellow and add a larger bulb but at the moment I think it looks just fine.

Plate wall revealed

Those of you who follow my flea market finds will know that I have had a plate wall on the agenda for quite some time, well it's not yet finished but is up and running at least. I plan to add a few and swap a few around but for now I'm quite taken with my little collection of plates.

I must also apologise for my bloggy absence, what a shocker I'm having, can't seem to find my crafty and blogging mojo............it's creeping back slowly so watch this space.

Flea Market Finds

I cruised past Vinnies a week or two ago and could not get a park, I always just keep driving and try again next time, lucky I did as the next day I spotted these Bentwood chairs that were apparently delivered on closing time the night before. I was about to purchase new Bentwood chairs in white but at $365 each I figured these $20 ones will do just fine. I wont need to get all stressed when the kids knock them over and scratch them as I know they will. Now, all I needed to do was find 4 more and give them a lick of white paint.

Then, my good friend and I happened across these beauties at this wonderful place. They had 6 for $400, I offered him $350 (plus their standard 20%) and walked out one happy chappy. Some new shots of my new dining room to come soon.

This little wooden box wasn't a flea market find as such but I did find it in our shed. The kiwi in the family likes in on display even if it is in the bathroom. I teamed it with some glass jars found at oppys and garage sales.

These little vintage books were found in Wagga last school holidays. They are lovely and the kids love them.

Some retro canisters for the kitchen cupboard were found at a garage sale for $5. Loving those colours, a bit different to all the brights you usually see.

And some Fowler jars for $1 each....gotta love that.

bed time shenanigans

So the boys share a room which usually works really well. Harvey always goes to bed at 730 with Charlie trailing behind him by at least half an hour. Tonight Harv decided he'd secretly wait up, he was in a very happy mood and did not want to go to sleep without his big brother. By 930 the chatting and giggling got louder and louder and the threats of the hall light being turned off went through one ear and out the other. When I decided to stomp up the hall and growl at them both I discovered this........

I had to hide the smirk on my somewhat cranky face and go grab the camera.

I shared a room as a kid and mostly loved it, we hummed songs and played guessing games, played music quietly and did all we could to not go to sleep but we were never THIS crafty......

What do your kids do to fight the sleep?

Flea Market Finds

Op shopping has been really slow once again, it's not that I haven't been trying but just not finding anything of much interest. I'm sure my luck will turn soon.

This is an oldie but my absolute favourite colour, Vinnies $5

Some pretty peachy, pink plates for $1 each.

My mum found these amazing buttons from the 30-40's, they are glass beads and wire. I'm thinking of making some yoyo's and putting them on a top for Rosa. They would also make lovely ear rings.

She also found some cute vintage fabric, I really must start using some of this childish fabric, I've got quite a stash now.

Bibs and Burp Cloths

When my sister asked me to put together a little bundle of goodies for her work colleague leaving to have a baby, I knew just what I'd make. Inspired by bibs and burp cloths over here I set to work, tweaking a bib pattern found online and basically halved fat quarters for the burp cloths. Anyone who has feed a bubba knows just how handy these things are, you need one at every post. I used thrifted chenille for the backing which makes them very absorbent and nice and soft.

Flea Market Finds

It's been ages since I've played along with Sophie's flea market finds. I've had a real dry spell in my thrifting lately and feel like I'm just coming out of it. Some of my favourites from the past week....

Loving these vintage fabrics especially the butterflies (thanks Sis)

Some old bed sheets perfect for my quilts

I looooove this white planter/vase thingy, it's really old and a bit crazed on the inside but not a chip or scratch, I didn't even baulk at the $15 price tag. I have the perfect window sill in mind.

I picked up the crochet blanket in Wagga ages ago, had mum patch up a few holes and now it's a good as new, I've washed it three times and am slowly managing to rid it of the moth ball smell. How great are those colours together?

Another favourite for the week is this little red sugar bowl, German made and super shiny and cute. Also another plate for my wall and round table cloth.

And finally a tiny china tea set my mum gave Rosa for her birthday, she loves it and we have already had a few tea parties. There are 5 cups in total.

Happy Birthday Rosebud

Today is a special day; especially as I write this. It was at this exact time when my baby girl Rosa Elisabeth was born. She celebrates her 4th birthday today and her massive smile was constantly planted upon her face. Happy birthday gorgeous! we love you to bits!

Springtime Quilt

yay! I've finished my Springtime quilt, I toyed with the idea of backing it in white chenille but couldn't go past this sweet blue rose print, if you look closely at the back the fabric has a green wood grain through it which I love and it's certainly very girly and busy. Using all upcycled bed linen makes for one very soft and snuggly baby quilt.

Jam Drops

Today the Nana in me had me pulling out this fabulous cook book (thanks Kye) and the 70's table cloth. I found this little dome and plate at Vinnies a couple of weeks ago and have been busting to fill it up, even if it only lasts an afternoon in our household. Jam Drops were on the agenda and Rosa loved her job of poking the holes.

The kids and I bake together a couple of times a week and stick to our usual favourites of Anzacs, choc chip biscuits and banana cake. Harvey and I will be in the kitchen tomorrow baking up a storm for his teacher's birthday......any ideas?

Springtime quilt and happy mail

I've finally made a start on my very first vintage fabric quilt. These are all pre loved sheets from op shops and fat quarter swaps. I have the biggest stash and it must go down because I keep seeing lovely sheets and just have to buy them. I have to justify it somehow, they all can't seriously make it onto our beds.

This pretty number is made up of 5" squares and is going to our neighbour's baby who was born six months ago. I'm using a thrifted white chenille bedspread for backing..................does anyone else take this long to get baby gifts out? I'm feeling a little guilty.

And now for some happy mail shots. I won these gorgeous baby burp cloths from the lovely Tania over at Ivy Nest. I know a certain someone having a baby girl soon so at least she wont have to wait six months for her pressie. Aren't they lovely? they are so soft and I love the yellow.

Just a few op shop finds this week, A sweet set of 4 Arcopal France mugs, the kids love their hot chocolates in these, they are the perfect size and the perfect price of $2 for the set.

Two small plates for my plate wall, I love the simple design on the top one.

A Pyrex plate found for $1.........I spy one on Sophie's post too!

And the week wouldn't be complete without some bright orange Pyrex for $6.

Florence cushions

My friend recently bought this lovely Florence Broadhurst fabric from here. I'm making her a couple of cushions for her lounge, she kindly gave me the rest of the fabric so I whipped up a couple for my friend's birthday this week, she has been in hospital with pneumonia so hopefully they will cheer her up a bit.

I used a charcoal pre made piping which I love (anything to get out of making my own) and an almost black micro suede. I positioned the zip across the back as I'm yet to learn how to add a zip in the bottom of piped cushions. I loved how they turned out and can't wait to make the other two.

Stepping up

Last school holidays my older two did an afternoon mosaic workshop turning an old grey paver into a beautiful work of art.

Two very colourful stepping stones were laid yesterday while doing the gardening and enjoying the Sydney sunshine. Now I'm off to the hardware store to get another one for Rosa. I have all my old mosaic tiles and grout tucked away in the shed. This week we will create a girly one to add to the boys.

Plates

I've been collecting an assortment of plates on my op shop visits lately. I love the antique floral, the modern and the retro, what ever takes my fancy I buy and see how they all look together. I'm planning on creating a plate wall feature in my new kitchen.

Inspired by these gorgeous images (sorry I have forgotten where I found these images, if they are yours please let me know so I can credit you).

And this little box set beauty was found on my recent trip to Daylesford, I've been eyeing them off online for a while and finally bought them as a birthday gift to me. Rob Ryan is so talented and each plate comes with a lovely meaningful saying. I'll be finding a special spot on my wall for these too.

Progress

It's been measured and ordered, I'll be counting the weeks until our new kitchen is in.

There is a lot of floor work to be done before I get too excited. Yes I have lost my sink and have become accustomed to washing up in the bathtub. Yes I've been staring at a dirt floor for the best part of a week and yes our house smells like a musty, damp garden....but it will all be worth it come mid September.

And I can't say my makeshift kitchen is all that bad.................yes that is an installed dishwasher in the corner with the pipe out the window.....yes I have a handy husband who tries ever so hard to make my life easier.

Vintage Birthday - Flea Market Finds

Those who know me well know my love for vintage goodness, be it from the local oppie or the slightly more expensive antique store or gift shop. So when these beauties were unwrapped on my birthday this month, lets just say I was a tad excited.

The perfect addition to my milk glass collection, this cake stand matches my fruit stand and now I have these 4 little dessert bowls to go with. Thanks Ma!

Queensland Clutch

This clutch would not be everyone's cup of tea but I just love the simple pattern in the Meet Me At Mikes first book. A great way to use up all of those op shopped tea towels you have in your stash. This one was added to my swap partners package and being a Queensland gal I thought it perfect.

Lakota's Flea Market Swap

The lovely Lakota organised a Flea Market swap recently and matched me with the very clever and generous Nelly.

Look at the cute dragon scarves she knitted for the boys, even a warning from mum not to loose them at school didn't stop them from racing out the door with them on, perfect timing last week for Sydney's dreadful rainy weather. Harvey is such a blue boy and Charlie always goes for red so there were no fights in deciding who gets what. The boys were also treated to spiderman cards and mini tape measures which they loved and whisked away before I could photograph.

Mine is so soft and such a beautiful colour, Nelly even added little pearls in the detachable flowers.

Rosa really scored here, Holly Hobbie all round, the vintage wrapping papers are divine.

A quirky scrabble ring and some yarn and needles, she even cast on for me so I could practise my knitting.

A lovely milk glass dish for my collection, perfect for soap in the bathroom. Also the sweetest zip flowers as hair clips and brooches. Love the little vintage pink button.

The fabric lover in me found this my favourite of all the gifts, it's like a barkcloth and has the most sweetest print. I could look at this piece for ages.......any hints on what to make???

Sherbet Pips Quilt

I've finally put my Sherbet Pips to good use, One of my old school friends had a bubba girl earlier this year, she is the sweetest little girl named Milla Poppy and her Mumma assures me that they love it.

I threw in a few extras from spotlight and some honeycomb kei as well. My new favourite way of quilting is just wonky lines doubled up on each seam. I've made this pattern many times and always used straight lines either side of the seam but the wonky method is far more effective.

The weather in Sydney has been atrocious so my pics are not the greatest. I've had to enhance them a little, the red really isn't that bright.

I'm very late linking up with Sophie this week, with the kids going back to school, hubby overseas and a birthday thrown in it had me a little busy. I had a great little country Victoria jaunt with my BF in the holidays (more on that later) and found lots of thrifty goods.

Some lolly like buttons which almost look good enough to eat, $2.

A huge stack of vintage linens and pretty fabric, some green Holly Hobby thrown in there as well.
Not to mention the cutest retro stool for $5. I'll be covering this one day soon I hope.

I adore this cake stand, we found it at an little antique shop in Shepperton, the guy gave it to me for for $15 and kept trying to throw in little bits and pieces for free, all of which I did not want but he was quite funny. My friend thought he was drunk and I just thought he reeked of cigarettes and dogs. He said we were way too pretty to be mum's (like mum's can't be pretty, no?) and just assumed that because we were female we must have been nurses, we giggled our way out of there......................he seriously must have had his beer goggles on because we were by no means looking gorgeous....(sorry Lea). I asked him for a few freebies that we actually liked and he obliged. I will definitely be heading back there next time I'm in the area. The best thing about this cake stand is that my dome top fits perfectly and now has a mate as my last stand broke.

He also sold me this piece of Brazilian porcelain which is my favourite find of the holidays. It was $45 but said I could have it for $25.....bargain!

Flea Market Finds

This week I didn't visit many op shops but the ones I did proved to be fruitful. I'm not showing all I found this week as I'm still catching up on some oldies but still worthy of a mention. This glass jar was only $2 and is filling quickly with all my oppy zips. A pyrex tea pot for $2 as well, I love this and it goes with my coffee one from a few weeks back.

I thought all my Christmases had come at once when I spotted this nest of Pyrex at Vinnie's a couple of days ago. It matches a cute little number I found for my friend on my last country jaunt. $10 for the lot, I've paid $12 for one of the larger size before...

And this, you'll either love it or hate it. I'm not even a fan of cats but the colours got me and just wait to see what I do with him. I have already unpicked the daggy brown velour backing.

And a simple turned wooden bowl for my jewellery on my bedroom mantle $2, couldn't pass it up.

Op Shop Colour

This winter I'm loving all the colour that's the op shops have to offer. As I've said before I've always been one for beige, white and naturals but bursts of colour are filling my house and it's making me happy. This gorgeous selection of knitting needles are were all found at the one shop, there are some tortoise shell and English made ones in there too. Maybe if I look at this bunch long enough it will prompt me to learn to knit.

I love this little $2 mug, I just loved the design and thought it was perfect for my desk. I googled the brand and found that the Norwegian design and brand Figgjo are quite collectible.

This little English tin was only $1. I'm not normally one for collecting tins but I just love the tiny bit of blue with the red. Perfect for my leaf tea.

And this is designed and printed in Australia, cute little pillow case which Rosa has claimed as her own.

birdie lampshade

I finished Rosa's birdie lampshade today, Using all scraps I cut approximately 1.5 cm strips of any girly fabric I could get my hands on and just started wrapping and wrapping and wrapping. Pretty soon I ended up with this...............the lampshade was thrifted and already a gorgeous shape, now the fabric just makes it all the more prettier. The birdie pattern was found here and is super simple. I also used thin strips and plaited them to make the string to hang the birds from.

And finally a pic of Rosa's room, after all I did name my blog after it and I don't think I have ever shown a full picture of it. Always a work in progress and ever evolving....next up white walls.

Lots of lovelies found this week and last, once again the country oppies did not disappoint.

This English retro beauty was found in Sydney, I love the green and yellow and the oval shape. I saw another woman spying on it when I put it on the counter,lucky I got there first I say.

This is one of my favourites, it's a milk glass juice decanter. I love the childish design, so bright and colourful.

some beautiful vintage children's books, the illustrations in these are so gorgeous, there are definitely some frame worthy pages in there if I can bring myself to rip them out.

more Holly Hobbie love, the sheet is in such good condition, don't know if I can bring myself to chop into this either.

one can never have enough rose floral table cloths and tea towels.

I found these Krups kitchen scales for $7.50 at the Salvo's in Goulburn. My sister nabbed them as she has a thing for orange and they do look great in her kitchen.

I'm loving the sweet fabrics I found too, the cherries are divine, I can't wait to make Rosa a summer sundress to wear with her red saltwater sandals.

Snippets of a Long Weekend

The past long week end was so nice. My sister, Rosa and I took a trip to Wagga to visit our family. We left boys and the rain behind us.

Casserole night, toasted marshmallows and open fire in my brother's back yard was bliss.

Spending just a little bit of time with this precious poppet was special.

The sunny, lazy picnic in the park was priceless.

Receiving a much loved crochet cowl from my mum was appreciated.

Happy Birthday Charlie Boy

My gorgeous first born turned 8 today, I seriously cannot believe it has been 8 years since we bought this beautiful boy of ours into the world.

Here he is (left) after a fabulous Sunday at Luna Park with his best friend Luke and Rosa and Harvey. He and Paul took a train into the city in the morning to pick a special present at the hobby shop and ended the day eating ice cream and playing with his new electric train set.

Kitchen Thrifty Finds

A few kitchen things were to be found this week. Some great glass jars to house my tea and coffee.

I found this tin in Vinnie's for $2, the lovely lady next to me at the counter said I should use it for agar salads. Now my siblings will have a little chuckle when they read this. As kids, every Boxing day we would begrudgingly go to a luncheon at Betty's house. Betty was the sweetest old lady from our church who always put on a spread of meatloaf, cold meats and the finest of agar vegies. There was jello peas, jello carrot, jello beatroot....you get the picture. We would giggle away in the corner and never manage to eat any, I'm telling you, nothing was rolling off our plate.

I have no intention of using it for jello carrots but you can find the recipe here for Grandma's Sunshine Salad. Oh and sorry sis, not ironing the tea towel (also an op shop find) Who's got time for ironing tea towels and table cloths.

One can never have enough retro, mustard Pyrex. Also my favourite for the week, a Noritake sugar bowl for $3.75....bargain. I see these on ebay for $25

Lemon Yoghurt Cake

I've been noticing a lot of home baking on blogs of late, here, here and here. This bowl of lemons is growing by the week so I've decided to share one of my favourite recipes found long ago in the Australian Women's Weekly.

Lemon Yoghurt Cake

1 cup Greek-style yoghurt

3/4 cup vegetable oil

1 1/2 cups caster sugar

2 1/4 cups self raising flour

3 eggs, lightly beaten

2 teaspoons finely grated lemon rind

1/3 cup lemon juice

Preheat oven to 180 degrees, whisk all ingredients until smooth and add to a lightly greased/floured bundt or ring tin. Bake for around one hour until or until cooked. Dust with icing sugar when cooled.

This cake is so easy and so moist and fluffy.

Cuckoo

This little cuckoo clock was by far my best find this week. I spotted it at the Kirribilli markets on Saturday. It is German made and hand painted in the sweetest floral. The little birdie is a tad loud popping his head out every hour so we have tucked the door closed.......(poor little guy). It will be heading into Rosa's room but for now I'm quite taken with it on my kitchen wall. I bargained the guy down from $60 to $45.

A mix of buttons, vintage sewing fasteners, a french tape measure and milk glass vase were all only a couple of dollars each........

For a bargain price of $10 I spotted this shell light fitting in Vinnie's. I thought about it for a day and decided if it was still there when I got back I was meant to have it. It is either too ugly for anyone else or just my lucky day. The yellow is going to go perfectly with my yellow birdie cushions in our new back room.

And of course my weekly op shopping adventures would not be complete without a piece of pyrex in my favourite colour.

Thrifty Cubby House

Yay! I managed to sew something this week. Using only thrifted linens I made this cubby for the kids, Harvey doesn't seem to mind the floral but Charlie, my almost 8 year old is way to cool to play in there. I pinched the idea from this book. I'm toying with the idea of adding a plastic window but for now it's easy to throw in the washing machine. Lets face it....do you ever really go back and finish those little touches when it works just fine the way it is?

Perfect for that wet week end or when Rosa's friends come to play.

So I walked into Charlie's room on the week end to put some clothes away when I immediately spotted this.......

I mean I know kids do strange things at times but a ball of bubbles on the dresser.....come on!
It was like he had just taken a toy from the toy box, had a little play then put in down when he had to get dressed for Rugby. I called him in to say "what's the go"? and he simply scooped it up and said "huh, forgot about that" and walked out to keep on playing with it.

Note to self: empty the sink when washing up is complete.

Holly Hobbie is definitely the flavour of the week for my op shop finds this week. I don't think there would be a 30+ old female out there who doesn't have a soft spot for this sweet little icon . I found this tiny vase in vinnies and a friend found the little wall hanging knowing my love for all things vintage, they are traditional HB and so sweet. The melamine plate isn't HB but for only $1 I couldn't resist.

Two of my poppets trying to help me get a good picture. Oh so helpful!

Some Holly Hobbie inspired linen, the single sheet was brand new still in plastic, I'm going to turn it into a doona cover for Rosa. The pillow cases were also from my friend. I adore the girly innocent designs.

I've also been finding lots of colourful metal zips perfect for my new project using my vintage linens.

Piles

I have many piles of creativity on the go at the moment. It's all getting a little over whelming as I want to jump into all of them at once. I find myself starting one thing then loosing concentration and putting another pile of fabrics together. I'm just playing around at the moment but what I really need to do is get some serious sewing done so I can cross some off my list.

Maybe this time next week I'll have lots to show you. Here's hoping anyway.

Flea Market Finds

I seem to be finding so much for Rosa's bed at the moment. A shame you don't find the best bed linen for boys. This Sheridan floral is like new and so pretty. It was a flat sheet which someone has made into a fitted. Gotta love that! The cotton gingham duvet cover and pillow case was found for a bargain. I also found the crisp cotton flat white as well.

I found this square table cloth in Wagga, I love the peach and aqua together.

Knowing my love for milk glass my mum ~~stole~~ found this miniature candle holder at my Grandma's house. I love the hobnail, just like the rest of my collection and so nice that it came from Grandma's. I know she doesn't know I have it but I'm sure she'd be happy to see that I love it and have it displayed on my mantle of special things.

Yet another piece of aqua pyrex. I paid $5 for this little cup and saucer and I just love the colour and tiny gold rim. Another one of my country oppy finds was this white jug and sugar bowl (minus the lid). My mum tried to talk me out of it but the rainbow reflection was calling me and I couldn't leave it there.

Rosa is pretty happy with it, the double handles makes for a perfect cup for her hot chocolates and now even the boys are fighting over it.

Vintage Goodness

Look at this bunch of vintage fats which landed on my doorstep yesterday. To say I'm happy with my loot would be an understatement. I looooove the top brown rose one the best followed by the aqua stripe with black dots a close second. Thanks lovely ladies who joined in and a big thanks to Kel from Green tea and Red nails. To say that you could not fit them all in your car at once just goes to show the enormity of the task of sorting and posting. Well done you!

I have about six sewing projects on the go at the moment but I have a little something in mind with my new brown rose................more sewing time needed me thinks.

Thrifty Goods

My pyrex collection is certainly growing with a few pieces in gorgeous blues and shiny white. This blue beauty was $12, a tad pricey but had to have it. Below the dessert bowls were only $1 and the white Fridgie with lid in perfect condition was $5.

I adore these sweet dessert bowls in a rainbow of colours, so shiny and new.....trifle anyone? $2 each

I have to share the story about these little frosted gold and pastel tumblers which I am also in love with. I was lurking close to the back room of Vinnies on the week end when I heard one the old dears saying "trust me they are from the 60's, I'm telling you...... put $2 each on them, they are real goers and wont last long, give them a little wash and they'll come up a treat" I couldn't see what they were talking about but of course I couldn't leave without knowing so I had a little peak in the back room and spotted them. I patiently waited at the front counter and the lady bought them out ready to be priced, another lady screwed up her face when the old dear said $2. I swooped and said I'll take them, no need to price them, thanks very much. Go and tell the other dear out the back how quickly you sold them I said. We all laughed and I walked out one very happy girl...

My mum found the pretty rose oil painting and I found the fabulous gold mirror and another little tapestry yesterday, all for Rosa's room. I'm thinking a painting the frames white but the more I look at them the more I am taken with the gold.

All in all I'm pretty chuffed with this weeks finds, I'm playing along with Her Library Adventures, go take a peak.

A perfect day

The thought of packing the family to go out was way too hard, a picnic in the sunny backyard and a long snooze in the sun was just what the doctor ordered. Hope all the mum's had a happy day, I certainly did.

Country Op Shops

What is it about country op shops? I managed to get to three in Wagga over the Easter break and they certainly did not disappoint . Apart from this gorgeous colourful Afghan I found in a Sydney Vinnie's for $15 everything else and more was found on my little jaunt in Wagga.

My eyes seriously popped when I spotted this little number and I just love it in my little corner of the lounge. Perfect for these chilly nights.

A little turned wooden pedestal platter. Those pears are normal size so the platter is quite small. I really love it. $2

A cute glass vase for my mounting collection of favourite things on my mantle. 50c

Some sweet linens to chop up for a quilt which has been on the cards for some time. If I stopped using them for their intended purpose I might have enough by now.

I adore this little tapestry, it was only $4 and was with another more boyish one, I so wish I had bought it too. I sent mum back a few days later and it had gone. Rosa's is the next room to be painted white so when I'm done she will have a wall full of beautiful things.

This Pyrex coffee percolator came without it's middle but to tell you the truth I didn't even know it was for coffee, the handle is even made of Pyrex and I think it will make the best cold drinks jug. Later I saw them selling on ebay for up to $50, pretty chuffed mine only cost $2. Also some sweet English crockery. I love the black one and it was only $2 for the set. The pretty bone china ones were $3 each and in beautiful condition.

I always have lots of fun in the country oppies, mainly because I shop with my mum and brother and sisters, so much more fun when you can share your finds with someone else. The people are always friendly and the prices are so so good. For more Thrifty finds head over to Sophie's.

My sister picked up this vintage pillow slip on one of her op shop visits and thought I would like it. I liked it so much I wanted two.

I simply unpicked it, added some white quilt sheeting which I always have on hand. A quick sew and overlock around the edges and.......

Voila...... two brand new vintage pillow slips which go beautifully with my white and charcoal in the bedroom.

The back renovation is moving along quite nicely, we got some painting done over the last couple of days and oh what a task it is choosing white. I have had samples on the walls for a week, too scared to jump into it.....will it be too cold?....will it be too yellow?. We finally opted for Dulux Antique White USA. A popular choice by many, or so google tells me. After finishing the first coat at 1130pm last night, we decided we made the wrong choice. I have been texting friends and messaging fellow bloggers to find the perfect white. What's your favourite white?

My lovely friend Vicky gave me the best goody bag when we caught up the other day. I just love my clay bunnies, they are perfect for pressies but I reckon they are twitching for a homemade bunny tree.

I especially love the blue lace bunny. They are not going on pressies, I'm keeping them all to my self.

White and floral

It seems all things white and floral are catching my eye at the moment. Most of you know my love for milk glass, not sure if these tiny cups are milk glass but they are white, small and French. Perfect for Rosa's tea parties. $6 for the six piece set.

One very lovely piece of hobnail milk glass. I paid $18 dollars for this and it's only 6 inches tall but I just had to have it. It seems all the op shops near me know what is of semi value and whack the price up.

I have been collecting old mix master bowls at different trips lately and these ones fit beautifully together. They are great for baking and salad bowls. I love how shiny and white they are. I'm on the lookout for one slightly larger than the smallest one, then I'm done.

It was also my lucky week end for vintage sheets, these two are brand new and so pretty, I love the blues in this one. Perfect for the Vintage Sheet Swap over at this sweet blog.

Cushions

A couple of cushions I made this week. I love the sunny yellow and grey birds. I bought the fabric from here. They are stuffed with feather inserts which makes them so puffy and squishy and wont flatten like cheaper inserts.

We are currently renovating the back of our home. We are doing it ourselves so at times it does seem to take forever but so rewarding not to mention saving $$$. It leaves me with less guilt when I want to buy beautiful fabric like this.

I was a tad excited when I spotted this Parker chair right up the back in the furniture section of Vinnies on Friday. I was so happy with my new $25 chair that I even went back on Saturday just in case it was part of a set and I missed the others.......wishful thinking! This chair matches my dining table so well, even if I could just find one more, one for each end of the table I'd be a very happy girl indeed. Where are his 5 friends from the 70's I ask???

Giant Patchy Cushion

Last week end I finished my giant patchwork cushion. I've had all of these fabrics for so long and as a couple are my favourites, namely the grey Flea Market Fancy, I had to get them off the shelf and into something usable.

My lucky stars were shining down on me this week, I found so many great oppy buys, I'm still beaming from this little piece of wooden beauty. This lovely old fashioned sewing box is made of teak veneer and is in beautiful condition. I paid $20 and while I was looking at it a lovely old lady was admiring it and saying that she had one in her family, she had 3 sisters and sadly missed out on it as she wasn't the oldest. She told me it was a "beauty" and I should definitely buy it. My 7 year old was only too eager to replace the screws for some new shiny ones and re fit the handle. He now wants it as his tool box.....I think not!

Now.... what to use it for? I'm tempted to use it as a side table for my cuppa and a book or two.

But just look at this storage, both sides look like this and my thread and scissors are calling it......what would you use it for?

These vintage girly sheets were $12 and brand new, starched and pressed. The are way to pretty to cut up, they have already found their way onto Rosa's bed and she loves them.

And this pink, violet and cream wool Aussie made blanket will do the same come winter.

And a little bit of sunshine to add to this dreary Autumn day in Sydney....... 6 happy yellow napkins.

Sick kiddies prevented me from op shopping last week so here's some bits picked up over the last couple of months.

One very orange and white cross stitch square table cloth. I love the simplicity of this.

I love this crochet round table cloth too, it's in perfect condition, I had plans to dye it but now I'm quite taken with the beige.

Some crochet pot holders which I don't think I will ever use but just liked them. I find this sort of colourful crochet comes in hand for Rosa's tea parties.

And this one my mum picked up for me, I love the teal and once again its perfect for Rosa's cubby and tea parties on the floor or a snuggle on the couch.

Quilt for Queensland

I have finally finished my quilt to donate to the "Quilts for Queensland" appeal organised by the very thoughtful Corrie. Using 6.5" squares in girly fabrics from my stash, I made a single bed quilt perfect a tween or teen.

Who ever she is I hope her and her family are coping and getting back on their feet after the awful devastation earlier this year. I also hope she loves her new quilt.

I've been having fun this week ducking into the local oppy here and there

Gotta love this retro ice bucket complete with tongs. I think I'll ditch the tongs and use it as storage in my sewing room.

Yet another piece of milk glass. This one was found when I walked past an alterations shop, my milk glass radar must be on, I mean who ever finds vintage crockery in such a shop.

Three linen tea towels in the best colours, #2 is of big lobsters on a beige background. I'm thinking a few clutch purses might be in order.

Some lovely linens and pretty needle work.

I'm going to try to use these three as yokes for some dresses or tops for Rosa. I love these!

Little Birdie quilt

It's a record, the owner of this quilt is only a month old and I'm done, it was such a quickie to whip up and I really love how the fabrics came together. Another bonus was that all of the fabrics were in my stash, which means my piles are getting lower and lower and of course this means I get to buy more fabric.

I especially love the grey linen backing, makes for a very soft and snugly quilt. I hope baby Fergus loves it too.

The only thing worth picking up from my oppy visits this week were these sweet little Pyrex dessert bowls. They were $2 each and I'm loving the grey.

Now, I'm not a fan of sardines but at only $2, this cute french mini plate won me over instantly. I've had this one for a while, it serves perfectly as a spoon resting plate by the stove.......I'm loving those colours too!

Flea Market Finds

So I was feeling a little grumpy this afternoon, the hubby had been overseas for a week which happened to be the last week of school holidays, my lovely children had been driving me a tad bonkers and a sore throat into the mix had me feeling a bit blah!

The remedy: a quick dash to my local oppy, with only 30 minutes to closing time I had to be quick.

Just when I thought I had seen all there was to see, this little treasure popped into my sight.

A stunning piece of milk glass .

These cute linen coasters, they are really tiny, only a 2.5 " square (the lady tells me they are for resting your sherry or port glass on)..........think I'll find another use as I don't drink sherry or port.

And a French casserole dish in almost new condition.

Suddenly I no longer feel grumpy, funny that!

My find this week is a fabulous vintage desk found at Vinnies in Wagga over the Christmas break. I paid a tiny $10 for it. The glass jar was rescued from my Grandma's shed, it was covered in dirt. Perfect for a fat bunch of pencils for the kids colouring table.

Well what a start to the year it's been. I have not been motivated to sew or blog at all, I know it has not been a happy start to the year for many Australians but I'm sure you will agree when you switch on your computer and see all of the fabulous things fellow bloggers are doing in relation to the terrible floods, it really lifts your spirits and makes you want to do all you can to help.

It's time for me now to get motivated and make a start on some quilt blocks and a quilt for Retro Mummy's Quilts for Queensland. Hop over and have a look at some of the beautiful quilts already donated.

In the meantime here are just a few things I made for Xmas pressies:

A slightly larger version of the bath mat featured in the 3rd issue of Fat Quarterly. I loved making this with the large Hexes, tedious at times but I got there in the end.

I've been busy making White Christmas for teachers this year. It's so simple and yum.

My friend Vicky made these gorgeous hand printed clay and card tags which add an extra nice touch.

White Christmas:

800 gms of white chocolate

2 cups dessicated coconut

1 cup of shelled unsalted pistachio nuts

1 cup of craisins

Melt chocolate and mix all ingredients together, set in fridge in a slice tin lined with grease proof paper. Cut into cubes before it sets rock hard.

My fingers are hurting from so much stitching. I think I need to take a couple of days off from hand stitching. There are still at least four more gifts I could be machine sewing........watch this space!

Nana's quilt - Flea Market Finds

Well I can finally say I have started my Christmas gift sewing. A few weeks ago I came across this blue crystal box full of Nana fabrics in Vinnies for $6. I knew immediately what I was going to do with these. A quilt for my Mother In Law, these colours match her lounge room perfectly.
